A-level经济学中，有一种市场结构叫 monopolistic competition。初学的时候可能会把这个和monopoly搞混，但是两者是非常不同的。从图像上来看的话，和monopoly的确有一点相似。但是，在monopolistic competition，long-run的时候只能赚normal profit，而monopoly可以获得abnormal profit。
monopolistic competition特点:
A large number of firms
Each firm has only a small share of the market.
Product differentiation
Each firm has a slight differentiated in some degree of monopoly power to control its own brand.
Few barriers to entry into and exit the market
There is freedom of entry of few firms into the industry.
A little market power in pricing
Price maker: firms have some influence on the market price through product differentiation.
在monopolistic competition中，公司的数量非常大，商品的种类也不同。每个公司对市场有一点影响力，所以demand curve for each firm is downward sloping。但是，demand curve同时也是elastic的，因为有很多substitutes。进入壁垒和退出壁垒非常小，所以导致在long-run无法赚到abnormal profit。
也就是说，垄断竞争是一种介于完全竞争和完全垄断之间的市场组织形式，在这种市场中，既存在着激烈的竞争，又具有垄断的因素。
那么，价格和产量是怎么确定的。
垄断竞争厂商在决定产量和价格的方式时与垄断厂商完全相同。另外，垄断竞争厂商也可能会有损失出现。
Price
.As a price-maker,monopoly firm sets the price where MR=MC to get maximum profit.
Output
.Output set atmaximising profits output where marginal cost equals to marginal revenue.
在monopolistic competition中，公司坚持使用profit-maximization，也就是MC=MR。
The disadvantages of monopolistic competition
Productive inefficiency
Firms will not producing at the least-cost point.
All ocative inefficiency
Less will be sold and at a higher price.
在monopolistic competition中efficiency的分析：因为公司普遍生产在MC=MR，所以不会生产在AC的最低点，所以也就是Productive inefficiency。其次，因为AR是Demand curve，如果生产在MC=MR的话，价格会高而产量会低，所以没有满足MC=AR的条件。因此是Allocativeinefficient。
